| Avenue Diner www | Diner | Informal | Here we have upscale dinering on the downtown restaurant strip. The prices. however, remain in the diner bracket, and the portions are as they should be—truck-driver breakfast size. Though the food quality seems to have dropped a little recently. | Belmont Diner www | Diner | Informal | As with all Calgary diners, expect lineups for breakfast on the weekends. But there is something about an old-fashioned bacon, eggs, pancakes, hashbrowns and milkshake breakfast that makes the wait/weight worthwhile. | 2008 33 Ave. SW 403 242-6782 | M to F 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Sa, Su, Hol 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. | ||||||
| Cora www | Diner | Informal | This is "Chez Cora" if you are from Quebec, and is a part of the popular chain of breakfast diners from that province. Breakfasts are always a difficult call for reviewers as, after all, they are breakfasts with bacon and eggs and waffles and all the other things most of us cook quite well at home. So in the end of the day, we end up looking closely at the quality of the product and the originality hidden among the fried eggs. Here Cora does well with a French touch in its crêpes and the healthy amount of fruit included with most dishes. Grant missed the hash browns, but it was decided that he just has to get over this and enjoy the potatoes they do serve. And do remember that as with all breakfast diners in Calgary, EXPECT LINEUPS. | #360, 5111 Northland Dr, NW. (Northland Vilage Mall) (403) 288-0040 | 4600, 130th Ave. S.E. | Diner Deluxe www | Diner | Informal | The emphasis is on the "Deluxe" here with top quality ingredients, and little special additions, like yam bits in the hash browns. Do be prepared for a wait at peak hours, but there's plenty of good coffee available and just watching the activity in the place is a show in itself. After 11 the menu expands beyond the usual breakfast specials to include salads, sandwiches, and old favourites like macaroni and cheese and meatloaf. | eat! eat! in inglewood | Diner | Informal | The day beings with breakfast and then runs into the usual selection of soups and salads, burger and sandwiches, drinks and desserts. The food was good, but not outstanding. The service, however, was depressingly slow. In fact, our server told the people at the table next to us that she had waited until Boxing Day to have her Christmas dinner. We thought she must have eaten at her own restaurant. It would probably have taken that long. Good vegetarian selection. | 1325 9 Ave. SE 403 532-1933 | |||||||
| Galaxie Diner www | Diner | Informal | Here was a restaurant that saw a split in the vote between Grant and Dorothy. Dorothy thought the hashbrowns were a bit salty and found the coffee strong. Grant downed the coffee and had helping after helping of the hashbrown refills. Then there was a debate as to whether it was on the 17 Ave. strip--It is just south of 17th.-- or whether it should be under the downtown listings. So here is the final decision: This downtown, breakfast-all-day type diner provides just what it promises-- good old-fashioned breakfasts, burgers, sandwiches and home made milkshakes. Some will like it more than others, but that is always the case. Give it a try and decide for yourself, but take cash as they do not accept credit cards. | 1414 - 11 St. SW 228-0001 | Sa, Su, Hol 7:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. M to F 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. |
