| Bow Valley Grill | General | Buffet | Eating in Banff amidst the multitude of fast food and often over–priced restaurants is a problem. But especially if you have guests with you and want to show them the best of the town, the Banff Springs Hotel holds both history and good food. The Bow Valley Grill provides a fine menu, but we would recommend the buffet. It is reasonably priced for the selection and should give everyone an excellent meal. And the tour of the hotel leaves regularly from just outside the door.Good vegetarian selection. | Banff Srings Hotel 405 Spray Ave. Banff, Alberta (403) 762-2211 | Daily 6:30 a.m. - 10 p.m. But watch for seasonal variations. | ||||||

| Costco | General | Fast Food | First there is "Brunch at Costco". This is free, made up of the samples being given out everywhere. We won't rate this. What we will tackle, however, is the lunch counter. The selection is limited, but wide, from hot dogs to pizza, from coffee to coke The presentation is predictably average. But let's be honest, at some of the lowest prices in town for the quality given, you might as well grab a snack here after shopping. www | 2853 - 32 Ave. NE | 90 Heritage Gate SE | ||||||
| Country Cousins Restaurant | General | Informal | Now you are in Mennonite country, so this is what you expect—simple, wholesome, inexpensive food in generous portions. At Country Cousins Restaurant, this is exactly what you get. Step back in time to home cooking as it once was. You can even buy some of the delicious sausage or a homemade pie on your way out. A "4" designation usually means a "destination" restaurant. Well, if you are in Linden this certainly is a place to seek out, and if you are from Calgary out drving, this is a good place to stop. We recommend the menu, though there is a buffet—all you can eat or single plate, large or small—at noon and night daily. | 1 St. NW (just off Centre Ave.) Linden, AB (403) 546-4444 | M to Sa 7:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. | ||||||
| Cravings Market Restaurant | General | Buffet | The restaurant experience at Cravings is fun. You are given a card and then go around to the different stands and pick out your food, ranging from sandwiches to soup, from Asian to Mexican, from pizza to lamb. However, when you sit and think about it after the first excitement has worm off, you realize this is just a rather complex buffet or a restaurant with quite a varied menu. And in the end of the day, this is a pleasant place to get tasty but ultimately rather ordinary food. Good vegetarian selection. | 7207 Fairmount Dr. SE 252-2083 www | |||||||
| Earl's | General | Informal | Earl's serves good food at reasonable prices, but among the good dishes are some very ordinary ones, and some of the small details, like homemade fries are missing, and the hamburger buns don't seem strong enough to support the hamburgers. | 1886 Café | General | Informal | This small café is set in one of the last original wooden buildings in the Prince's Island area, right in the middle of the Eau Claire Market complex. They specialize in breakfast, and the food is good, but the service rather unfriendly. | 187 Barclay Parade SW (Eau Claire Market) 269-9255 | Open 7 days a week at 7 a.m. | ||||||
| Extreme Bean Café | General | Informal | As the name implies, this started as a small coffee house just outside of the downtown area, but has grown over the years to a spot frequented by Foothills Hospital staff, residents of the area and many downtown drones wanting to escape the usual eateries in that area. It has become known as a place of sandwiches—hot and cold—soups, salads, smoothies, milkshakes, and daily specials of all kinds. Unfortunately for this review, we had been told that the wor won ton soup was the best in Calgary, so we all tried it. It wasn't. But we have promised ourselves to return and try some of the other goodies and maybe up the rating a bit. | Garden Cafe | General | Fast Food | This probably isn't a restaurant that you would set out to discover, but there will probably come a time when you will eat here. It is in the General Services Building at Foothills Hospital serving fast, inexpensive, bland, predictable food to the staff and visitors. Surprisingly there doesn't seem to be any stress on wholesome choices. But then again if you eat wholesome food, the hospital won't get you as a patient as often. | The Main Dish | General | Takeout | The is a high–quality take out establishment with everything from soup and sandwiches to salads and main courses. Here is the perfect place to stop to pick up the lunch you were too rushed to make or the dinner you are to exhausted to prepare. There is also plenty of room to eat in. And keep in mind their brunches on weekends and full service fine dining on Saturday nights. | The Metropolitan Grill | General | Informal | The "General" category is becoming crowded, especially in the downtown area, with "business" restaurants—places with an upscale feel catering to the oilpatch crowd with everything from gourmet burgers to AAA steak. The Metropolitan Grill leads these with a crisp businesslike décore and highquality dishes. One thing to note is that the lunch menu has a lot of quite reasonablypriced choices in the main section—things like hamburgers and sandwiches. However for some reason the chef forgets how to prepare these after 4 o'clock and that part of the menu is replaced by more expensive dishes, though the salad and pasta sections continue to give you delicious but more economical items for dinner. | 880 - 16 Ave. SW (Mount Royal Village) 802-2393 | 318 - 8 Ave. SW 263-5432 | ||||||
| Milestone's Grill & Bar | General | Informal | What we have here is an upscale Earl's with everything from hamburgers to pasta and steak to nachos—all with a certain sense of style and friendly service. Again though in this mix there are some hits and some misses. Reservations are recommended at peak times. | Moxie's | General | Informal | With everything from burgers and sandwiches to pasta and pizza on the menu, restaurants like Moxie's are difficult to grade. Often one or two superb items are dragged down by numerous bland ones, or "home style" can mean you should just have stayed at home and made the sandwich yourself. However, we believe the Moxie's does do things well, and deserves a try if you want a wide variety of items from which to choose at reasonable prices. | Pasu Farm | General | Informal | First, we have to say that we have been friends of PaSu Sheep Farm for years and highly recommend it as a place to take out-of-town visitors to give them a taste of the country. Pat and Sue remain enthusiastic hosts. The shop has unusual items, and the sheep and llamas and other animals make the day a pleasure for all ages. The food is good, featuring, of course, fresh lamb, though vegetables and other trimmings are a bit on the plain side. It is the service that has disappointed us. Coffee cups seldom refilled; the hot buffet staring half an hour after the cold food is out; serving dishes empty while new people are still arriving. These really don't take away from the pleasure of the overall experience too greatly, but there is an extra layer of attention that needs to go into a four glass restaurant. | Highway 2 North Take the Acme, Carstairs turn off, and follow the signs. | SAIT 4 Nines Cafeteria | General | Fast Food | Having enjoyed the haute cuisine of the Highwood at SAIT, we decided to see how the common people eat, so joined the students and staff at the cafeteria around the corner. OK, it is campus fast food, but it squeaked into the 4 rating with a good variety of dishes including the unusual at prices even students can afford. | SAIT 1302 - 16 Ave. NW The cafeteria is in the basement of the John Ware Building. www | M to F 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. | ||||||
| Serendipity Café & Home Decor | General | Informal | Not many of our reviews have "Home Decor" in the title, but Serendipity does because it is primarily a shop in Inglewood where one may browse for decorations, knickknakcks and gifts. But while looking around, you may want to stop for a cup of coffee, which Dorothy found a little weak or soup, sandwich, special of the day or even a breakfast, which Grant found quite okay. | The Siding Café | General | Informal | The only problem we faced with this restaurant was determining its category. With its decor and the large breakfast and burger menu, it might be a diner. The sandwich take–out counter made it a deli. Then noticing the ribs and pastas, we thought it could very well be a gourmet bistro. But no, it is just itself, and does that well, becoming a delightful diner, a deluxe deli and a superb bistro all in one. Give it a try. | Sunterra www | General | Informal | Most Calgarians have shopped at the high–end produce market, Sunterra. Many have tried their take–out dishes. But some have certainly mused, "Wouldn't it be wonderful to have them make an omelette right here for me or a burger or a sandwich or a salad or even a main course,, especially if that could be done for a reasonable price." Well, dreams have come true with the larger eat–in area in the West Market Square store. The dishes are simple but tasty and wholesome and economical. Give it a try.
