And there are touches of that heritage still to be seen—the red, electrically-lit altar just across from the crimson Coca-Cola clock. The food is good, and we have noticed that they have spiced it up as the general population has grown more accustomed to hotter dishes. The food was good, but not outstanding. The service, however, was depressingly slow. In fact, our server told the people at the table next to us that she had waited until Boxing Day to have her Christmas dinner. We thought she must have eaten at her own restaurant. A simple historic setting, a knowledgeable, friendly staff and innovative, delicious dishes. What more could one want? The menu is, as they describe it, "Contemporary French". But we have placed it in the "Gourmet" category so people don't arrive there expecting the usual French onion soup and escargot. The cuisine does dip into French sauces and French cooking methods, but the goes far beyond the original. There is good value for fresh, wholesome food in a no smoking environment, and on the way out remember to stop at the deli and pick up some of the sausages for which Spolumbo's is renowned.
