| Palace of Eats www | Deli | Informal | There are three cardinal rules of good restauranting: Keep it small; have a speciality. and do it well. Here the centre of attention is Montreal smoked meat either in a traditional sandwich or a Reuben, with bagels and lox included for a bit of variety. The meat is neither too cheap which makes it rubbery, too lean which makes it dry or too fatty which makes it greasy. It is just right. | Palace of Eats 1411 - 11th St. SW 403 244-6602 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. | |||||||

| Parkerhouse Grill & Wine Bar www | Bar | Lunch | We stopped by for lunch at this popular downtown haunt and found a staff eager to talk about the food and quite attentive in spite of the size of the crowd. And it was also pleasant to discover that we didn't feel crowded or that we had to shout to be heard. There is a good variety of food on the menu from mac and cheese to steak and clam chowder to pizza. Following the current trend in Calgary eating some of the old favourites have been spiffed up for the more discerning palate. There are some real treats in the process, but unfortunately some misses as well. All in all, it's worth a visit, if only for the rolls—parkerhouse, of course. Reservations recommended. | Pasu Farm www | General | Informal | First, we have to say that we have been friends of PaSu Sheep Farm for years and highly recommend it as a place to take out-of-town visitors to give them a taste of the country. Pat and Sue remain enthusiastic hosts. The shop has unusual items, and the sheep and llamas and other animals make the day a pleasure for all ages. The food is good, featuring, of course, fresh lamb, though vegetables and other trimmings are a bit on the plain side. It is the service that has disappointed us. Coffee cups seldom refilled; the hot buffet staring half an hour after the cold food is out; serving dishes empty while new people are still arriving. These really don't take away from the pleasure of the overall experience too greatly, but there is an extra layer of attention that needs to go into a four glass restaurant. | Highway 2 North Take the Acme, Carstairs turn off, and follow the signs. | Pelican Pier Seafood Bar | Seafood | Informal | The service is friendly in a pleasant strip mall location, but the fish was rather bland and the sauces just ordinary. Though we do give them credit for their no smoking time from 5 to 8 nightly and for their daily specials. | 4404 - 14 St. NW 403 289-6100 | Su noon - 9 p.m. M to Sa 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. | ||||||
| Peters' Drive-In | Hamburgers | Fast Food | In every city, there are certain restaurants that for whatever reason seem to tug at the heartstrings of the populace. In Calgary, Peters' is one of these. The line-ups are long, and the crowds are enthusiastic, especially for the milkshakes. And what brings out the multitudes and the fans? Average steam table hamburgers and good milkshakes. Why is it so popular? That, my friends, is a mystery of pop culture. | 219 - 16 Ave. NE 403 277-2747 | |||||||
| Pfanntastic Pannenkoek Haus www | Dutch | Informal | If the word "Pannenkoek" doesn't ring a bell in your mind, think of pancake. Then throw out that idea, as Dutch pancakes bear little resemblance to the tiny sweet things we enjoy for breakfast. They're large and thin and covered with goodies like potatoes and onions and bacon and cheese, or for dessert ice cream and toppings. We're talking somewhere between a crêpe and a thin crust pizza, but different. Anyway they're good and economical, so how could you go wrong? Good vegetarian selection. | 2439 - 54 Ave. SW (South of Central High School on Crowchild) 403 243-7757 | Sunday 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. M and Tu Closed W to F 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. | ||||||
| Phil & Sebastian Coffee Company www | Coffee | Informal | P and S do coffee right, so if that it what you looking for, you now know where to find it. In their Marda Loop location, they also serve soup, salads, sandwiches and deserts, again with great quality, but we did deduct a bit for the price of what you get. Of course there is good vegetarian selection. That is unless you count milk products as animals. | Calgary Farmers' Market (at the old Currie Barracks) Office number: 403 612-2266 | 2043 - 33 Ave. SW | ||||||
| Pho Xuan | Vietnamese | Informal | The decor is minimal, though in a rather authentic way. The portions are large, making this an excellent spoonful/dollar place to eat, though the largess of the portions is balanced out by a sight downturn in the quality of some ingredients, like the barbecued pork. | 920 - 36 St. NE (across from T & T) 403 204-1299 | |||||||
| Pizza Hut www | Pizza | Informal/ Take out | The crust is actually quite good, though as with most party pizzas on the market the toppings are less than spectacular and leave a wide margin of naked crustiness around perimeter. There are also other pasta dishes and extras all with the same eat–me–as–you–watch–the–hocky–game quality. You can create your own pizza, so you can be as vegetarian as you wish. | 403 310-1010 | Dine in - Take out - Delivery 3802 Brentwood Rd. | Pulcinella www | Pizza | Informal | The bright, contemporary setting, friendly service, fresh ingredients and ovens lined with stone from Mount Vesuvius unfortunately ultimately still deliver an ordinary, rather bland thin–crust pizza at a somewhat elevated price. | 1147 Kensington Crescent NW 283-1166 |
